New year, new you! Taking better care of yourself should definitely be on your new year’s resolution list! Having a healthier lifestyle will slow down your aging process, making you look and feel younger for longer.

You may have assumed that Botox is for correcting the aging process after it has taken place but just like eating healthy and working out, Botox an help slow down the age process before aging occurs!

Nurse practioner, Dr. Kat Lofley here at Amara calls it “spanx for your face.”

“As we age, our skin turn over slows down, so our skin is less resilient to bounce back. Our dynamic contractions in our face, which are the wrinkles that occur when we move our faces, eventually become static,” says Lofley.

So why get it as early as your twenties? “Botox is used to prevent those static wrinkles in your early years,” says Lofley. This means you will have less wrinkles as you age, just like a healthy lifestyle prevents aging from the inside out. “Aging is not the enemy, but aging gracefully is the goal.”

Many people still have reservations toward Botox because of popular culture references to a “frozen face.” Lofley says that is not entirely true.

“Botox can be done to maintain movement. A common misconception is that a face with Botox cannot make any expression. You can customize your treatment to maintain a natural look,” says Lofley.

One of the most surprising things about Botox is it is not only for your face! There are so many other uses for it.

“Botox can also be used for things like “bunny lines” when you scrunch your nose, to relax the lip and correct a gummy smile, soften the appearance and lessen tension from overly strong jaw muscles and even to create a fuller look in the lips. It can be used to treat excessive sweating in armpits, hands and feet.

“Some find that when they get their upper face treated, it can help with tension headaches. We have also seen significant improvement in skin texture as well, although there isn’t yet scientific data to support these claims.”
